"Go and Make Disciples of All Nations"
The king was rising to his throne. His plan of government was well defined. His right to reign was undeniably established. His ambassadors have been chosen. Now, the time has come to govern. Matthew 28:18-20 clearly presents the fundamental message of the Messianic kingdom, when given the Sovereign Savior sent representatives to the world. Let's examine this text and its implications for the disciples of Christ today.
The Mountainous Background: Whole Authority (18)
The statement made by Jesus to the apostles is absolute. All authority that would be given to the seed of David, it would establish his eternal kingdom, is now in the hands of Jesus. He conquered sin and the devil on the cross, and now takes his role as King of kings. The coronation of the King was pre-ordained by God and communicated by the psalmist 1,000 years before the coming of Jesus: "But I set My King upon my holy hill of Zion" (Psalm 2:6). The affirmation of Christ have received absolute authority fits perfectly in the image of Daniel from a stone, cut out without hands, crushing the smaller authorities and becomes a mountain that fills the earth (Daniel 2:35,44-45) . Now, Jesus said, "the mountain of the house of the Lord" is being set up hills and hills of human authority. Now the word of the Lord go forth from Jerusalem to all spiritual nations (Isaiah 2:2-4, Galatians 4:26, Hebrews 12:22-23).
Nobody can ever really get to Jesus without recognizing the absolute authority that belongs exclusively to him. He is the Savior, but he is also the Lord. He sends away our sins, but he also tells us to obey. We entered a special relationship and personal with one who calls us brothers, but we also enter into a relationship of submission to him who governs us as their subjects and servants. The kingdom is not a democracy it that makes laws subject to popular approval, is a benevolent monarchy with a king who has absolute authority.
In today's world, with its emphasis on freedom, independence and selfish gratification, the message of the absolute authority of the King Spiritual disliked by many. Men and women would like to shape a new image of Jesus, highlighting the features they find most enjoyable. They talk about love, kindness, generosity, friendship and blessings of the Savior, but neglect questions of authority, rules and obedience to the Lord.
Go, So ... (19)
The fact that the authority of Christ requires action. Jesus is not just an interesting historical figure. We do not learn it in a purely academic. When we find the Christ, our lives will change. Or we reject or we will be compelled to act by His commandments. The conjunction conclusive "therefore" suggests such motivation. When he looked at the eleven Galileans around him, Jesus said to them, like this "therefore" would determine the course of their lives: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations." This apostolic task, accomplished by a handful of men believe that the Messiah was with them, would change the world. Jesus told them to carry the message to the whole world, and claimed that his order was obeyed fully. He did not waste time listening to excuses, and nothing in the text suggests that they offered no argument. The King sent his ambassadors, and had said that the gospel would be preached to the whole world that generation (Matthew 24:14.34). Some 30 years later, the apostle Paul said that this mission was fulfilled when he said "the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven" (Colossians 1:23).
Make Disciples (19-20)
The command to make disciples is described by two gerunds that show what is needed to make disciples of Christ, baptizing (19) and teaching (20). Some people have misinterpreted this text, suggesting a list of three successive steps (Making disciples - baptizing - teach). Certainly we should continue teaching after the baptism of the new disciple, but is not the main point of this text. To become a disciple of Christ, one must be baptized for the remission of sins and needs to be taught "to observe all things" that Jesus has commanded. Let's pause to consider these two requirements of the process of making disciples.
Baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We highlight two facts here:
Jesus gave importance to baptism. Many doctrines today treat baptism as an act of little importance, even suggesting that he has no place in God's plan for our salvation. Such ideas do not come from Jesus. Here he presents baptism as necessary to be his disciple, and we know that no one will be saved without being a follower of Jesus (Acts 4:12). In Mark 16:16, Jesus said we must believe and be baptized to be saved. He commanded the apostles to preach the same message, and they were obedient to the Lord. Peter said in Acts 2:38: "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." In Acts 10:48, he "commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ." The apostle Paul addressed the baptism with urgency in his work (see Acts 16:32-33, 18:8, 19:5). Other New Testament preachers proclaimed the same message, affirming the necessity of baptism for salvation of the sinner. Philip taught the necessity of faith and baptism (Acts 8:12-13; 36-38). Ananias said to Saul: "And now why do you delay? Arise, be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on His name" (Acts 22:16).
We must be baptized in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In baptism, we enter into communion with God. Here, as in many other passages, God is presented as three eternal persons and perfectly united. We enter into Christ in baptism (Galatians 3:27). So obeying his word, we are privileged, too, by entering into communion with the Father (John 14:23) and the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). The language of Jesus describes the great blessing of being firstborn, members of the family of God (Hebrews 12:23). Some churches have invented new doctrines about baptism, using verses such as Matthew 28:19 and Acts 10:48 to defend some kind of formula for baptism. Some say that at the time of baptism, it is necessary to speak the exact words of Matthew 28:19: "in the name of the Father and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit." Others insist that baptism is valid only if you speak the words of Acts 10:48: "In the name of Jesus Christ." But these passages are not contradictory. When the apostles baptized in Jesus' name, they obeyed his word and acted by the authorization he gave. The result was exactly what he promised: communion with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is ridiculous to suggest some sort of conflict between Matthew 28 and baptisms performed by the apostles.
Teaching to observe all things that Jesus commanded. After being converted, the servant of Christ will continue to grow throughout life in understanding the will of Christ, but stresses the point that Jesus in Matthew 28:20 is a compromise. At the time of his conversion, nobody understands everything. In fact, every Christian should strive to grow in the knowledge of the word throughout their life (2 Peter 3:18). Some churches even require courses lasting months or years before a person is baptized, surely trying to lessen the possibility of it after quitting. Anyone should study enough to understand who Jesus is and how to obey his will. But we found instances in Scripture where people heard the gospel and made their decisions on the same day (Acts 2:37-41, 8:35-38, 16:32-33). We must be careful to teach all that is necessary, but our caution should not get so far as to hinder or prevent the salvation of anybody.
The point of teaching people "to observe all things" that Jesus commands is to show them how to take a solemn covenant with the Lord. An illustration helps. When my wife married me, she promised to "love, honor and obey." Does it that day, I knew all I ask throughout our life together? Of course not! She did not know the contents of all the orders of her husband, but is committed to submission to person. When we look at Christ, the head of the church, we should promptly make a commitment to absolute obedience to him. A person who refuses to do so is not ready to follow Jesus.
The Process Continues
The words of Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20 were directed to the apostles, and not directly to us. But the very fact that demanded their action requires the same of us. First, we must become disciples, turning to Christ, accepting the forgiveness that he offers through baptism and pledging our full obedience to him. So, we must communicate the good news of Jesus to others. Our mandate to evangelize comes from passages like 2 Timothy 2:2, where the Gospel is transmitted from one generation to another, and Hebrews 5:12, where the author introduces a sense of "duty" in the life of every disciple. Just as Paul's work filled the remainder of the afflictions of Christ (Colossians 1:24), we have an essential role in the evangelization of needy souls of our generation. As Christians today, we are in Jerusalem where the word needs to get out.
How or Why?
It's easy to worry about issues of how to evangelize, but that is not the point that Jesus emphasized. He started with why, and we must start at the same place. If you truly understand and appreciate why our work, we will have the necessary motivation to teach others good. It all starts with the person and position of Christ.
